“Do I need to go to business school to be good at business?”
My thoughts on whether an MBA is worth it
On a recent YouTube Q&A, one of my readers asked:
“Do I need to go to business school to be good at business?”
I shook my head and told him:
Absolutely not!
And this is coming from someone who’s been to business school.
I have an MBA, and let me not mince words here…
It did not not help at all when it came to actually buying businesses.
In fact, they didn’t even cover acquisitions as a subject!
Most of what I learned was theoretical rather than practical — like how to give presentations, and talk intelligently about certain corporate topics.
Business acquisitions are nothing like that.
It’s a very practical process.
You learn how to read P&Ls (profit and loss statements), tax returns, and valuations... how to negotiate and pay for the deal through a loan or seller financing... all very tangible stuff.
Most business schools won’t teach you how to do any of this.
That said…
Getting an MBA won’t hurt you.
But I would recommend steering clear of business school entirely.
Because the best way to figure out how to buy, sell, and operate businesses is through experience.
Some of the most successful people I know in the acquisition game didn’t even go to college!
Here’s how you get started:
Find people who have already accomplished what you’re trying to do, and learn from them.
Subscribe to YouTube channels from successful acquisition entrepreneurs (like mine 😉), buy books on the subject, take online courses... anything you can get your hands on.
Then follow in their footsteps, and try it for yourself.
It takes effort.
But that comes with the territory.
Acquisitions are a high-value skillset.
The payoff is, once you’ve gotten through six months to a year of focused learning, and built up that competency, you’ve got it for life.
And the ROI for your time is massive.
Case in point:
I learned how to do my first acquisition on my own four years ago.
And now, I own 7 businesses netting me over $850k in profit.
I didn’t use any special hacks or tricks to make that happen.
I was just a normal guy making a low six-figure salary, determined to do whatever it took to break free from the corporate world and build a better life for myself.
If that describes you…
Then understand that you can accomplish the same thing!
The only missing piece of the puzzle is having the right mentors in your corner.
